The Fiftieth Gate — שער הנו״ן
What the Rebbe Rayatz teaches about the gate Moshe did not reach — and how a Jew relates to it.

Where Gate 50 comes from source
"חמשים שערי בינה נבראו בעולם וכולם ניתנו למשה חסר אחד" — "Fifty gates of understanding were created in the world, and all were given to Moshe except one" (Rosh Hashanah 21b, from Ps. 8:6). From the start there is a structure: 49 gates a person can enter, and a 50th that is held back. The whole ma'amar answers one question — what is that fiftieth gate?
What the ma'amar teaches, step by step ma'amar
1. "Created" means "revealed."
"פי׳ נבראו הוא לשון גילוי" — the gates are "created" in the sense that they are there to be uncovered, and the uncovering happens through a person's own work (עבודה), specifically through Torah. Gate 50 is not a place you visit; it is a light you draw down.
2. The 49 vs. the 50th — rain vs. dew.
From "יַעֲרֹף כַּמָּטָר לִקְחִי, תִּזַּל כַּטַּל אִמְרָתִי" (Deut. 32:2), Torah has two modes:
| מ״ט (49) — rain / מטר | שער הנו״ן (50) — dew / טל |
|---|---|
| אתערותא דלתתא — arousal from below; what you earn by effort. | אתערותא דלעילא — a gift (מתנה) from above; dew falls unbidden. |
And the order matters: by laboring in the 49, you cause the 50th to be given. You cannot climb to the gift — but the gift comes through the climb.
3. Without the work you are "sick" — חולה = 49.
One who does not engage in Torah "נעשה חולה שחסר שער הנו״ן" — becomes choleh, sick, lacking the fiftieth gate. And the word proves it: ח8 + ו6 + ל30 + ה5 = 49 = מ״ט. Its being 49 exactly is itself the hint that the נ (50) is what's missing. (Torah is סם חיים / its absence סם מיתה — Yoma 72b.)
4. What the 50th gate is — the connector of חכמה and בינה.
"ידוע דשער הנו״ן הוא מחבר חו״ב" — the fiftieth gate joins Chochmah and Binah:
| חכמה — sight / ראִיה | בינה — hearing / שמיעה |
|---|---|
| "איזהו חכם? הרואה את הנולד" — a flash, all at once; ביטול במציאות; the level of אין. | "אֹזֶן מִלִּין תִּבְחָן" — grasping over time; ביטול היש לאין; the plane of יש made transparent. |
Gate 50 is the bridge between the flash of Chochmah and the unfolding of Binah — which is why it can't be reached by effort alone; it must be given.
5. Why Torah (not prayer) opens it.
Prayer is התבוננות, contemplation, so it yields only ביטול היש. But Torah is דבר ה׳ ממש, God's own speech ("וְדָבָרַי אֲשֶׁר שַׂמְתִּי בְּפִיךָ"). Learning it is like seeing the king's word leave his mouth — it produces ביטול עצמי, as if standing before the King Himself. That is why Sinai was "באימה וביראה וברתת ובזיעה", and true study carries that awe — learned "כעונה אחר הקורא", an echo without the noise of self.
6. The "sickness" — coldness, and Egypt.
The 49-without-50 state is קרירות, a chill — the coldness of Amalek ("אֲשֶׁר קָרְךָ"), the whisper "מקרה הוא" ("it's coincidence, not Providence"). The cure is Torah as מים, water — "הוי כל צמא לכו למים" — dripping on stone until "וַהֲסִירֹתִי אֶת לֵב הָאֶבֶן". The model is the Exodus: Israel sank into the 49 gates of impurity, fled the evil in one leap, then climbed the 49 gates of holiness through Sefiras ha-Omer toward the fiftieth.
7. Who finishes Gate 50.
His father framed it: "אתפשטותא דמשה בכל דרא" — the Baal Shem Tov is the "Moshe" of the generation with the fifty gates, the Alter Rebbe is Moshe with Chabad. "All were given to Moshe save one" — and that one gate, the fiftieth, is what chassidim complete, until Moshiach, through "יפוצו מעינותיך חוצה".
A worked example — health, not verdict synthesis
The ma'amar's own imagery is medical (סם חיים / סם מיתה, חולה, קרירות). The reframe: lacking Torah is a condition with a cure, not a crime with a sentence.
| In a person's life | In the ma'amar |
|---|---|
| Cooling, growing numb, "I'm fine, it'll pass" | קרירות — Amalek's chill; "מקרה הוא" |
| Drowsy, not noticing the danger | חולה = 49 — stuck, unaware the 50th is missing |
| The remedy: warmth, a fire, warm water on stone | Torah as סם חיים — the living word that re-warms |
Same medicine, two ways: Torah learned as דבר ה׳ is the elixir of life; learned as mere cleverness (חכמה to admire), the identical page becomes סם המות — like a potent drug that heals as prescribed and harms when self-administered.
