Gate 1
Two very different works are both called שערי בינה. The guide runs them side by side and keeps them clearly apart.

Track A — the halakhic Gate 1 oaths
מהות השבועה ועיקרה — "The essence of the oath"
What it is. The only gate that doesn't rule on a money-case; it defines the concept itself: what legally counts as a שבועה (oath)? Every other gate presupposes it — "without the definition of 'oath,' the rest are meaningless."
Entry. You enter Gate 1 whenever the question is "is this even an oath?" — the three tests: mention of the Divine Name or a kinuy, language of imprecation (leshon alah), and verbal acceptance by the swearer (kabbalah be-feh).
The six kinds of oath it previews: bitui (expression), shav (vain), pikadon (deposit), edut (testimony), shomrim (bailees), dayanim (judges). Lev 5; Ex 20; Shevuot
Why unique. It is definitional, not casuistic — the trunk; every other gate is a branch.
Track B — the mystical first gate Kabbalah
The first of the Fifty Gates
The system. "חמשים שערי בינה נבראו בעולם וכולן ניתנו למשה חסר אחד" (Rosh Hashanah 21b). The gates belong to the sefirah Binah — understanding, the "supernal Mother," source of all differentiated comprehension.
What the first gate is. In the widely-circulated enumeration the fifty ascend from matter to the Divine in five tiers of ten; the first is the foundation-stone — the comprehension of primordial, formless matter (hiyuli), where understanding begins its climb. later enumeration
How one enters. The lived form is Sefiras ha-Omer — 49 days from Pesach to Shavuos, climbing one gate of holiness a day toward the fiftieth. Entering Gate 1 is the first step up.
